How a vertical wall printer works
The machine is a UV inkjet printer turned on its side. It stands on the floor against the wall, and a printhead carriage runs horizontally across a rail while the carriage assembly climbs vertically. As the head passes, it fires droplets of UV ink onto the surface, and UV LED lamps mounted beside the head cure that ink within a fraction of a second. Nothing soaks in and nothing has to dry overnight — the printed band is solid before the machine moves to the next one.
Because the printed area is limited by the frame height rather than the wall, the machine finishes a vertical band, is rolled a step sideways, and continues the image. Software handles the alignment between passes. That is why print height is a hard specification of the machine, while print width is effectively unlimited.

Inkjet wall printer: how the printhead works
A vertical wall printer is an inkjet wall printer in the strict sense: the image is formed by a piezo inkjet printhead firing measured droplets, not by spraying or brushing. Vertiq machines use Epson-generation printheads (i1600 / i3200 class) running CMYK + White UV ink, with resolution from 720 up to 2880 DPI selected through 4, 6 and 8-pass modes. More passes lay down more ink and take longer; the pass count is how an operator trades speed against density on a given wall.
The white channel exists because UV ink is semi-transparent. On dark, strongly coloured or transparent surfaces a white underbase is printed first so the colours above it read correctly. Single-head models lay colour and white in sequence; dual-head models dedicate one head to white. Immediately beside the head, UV LED lamps cure each band as it is printed, so the ink hardens on contact instead of drying into the surface.
Keeping the head at a constant distance from an imperfect wall is the other half of the job: ultrasonic distance sensing reads the surface continuously and corrects for unevenness of up to 10 cm on the Vertiq Nova, for example. How it differs from a flatbed, a roll printer, or wallpaper
A UV flatbed prints onto rigid sheets — acrylic, aluminium, board — laid flat on a vacuum bed. A roll-to-roll printer prints onto media unwound from a roll: vinyl, banner, wallpaper stock. Both are excellent machines, and both produce an object that somebody then has to transport to site, align, and apply to the wall.
A vertical wall printer deletes that whole second half of the job. There is no substrate to buy, no seams to line up, no bubbles, no trimming around switches and sockets, and no wall preparation beyond making the surface sound and clean. It also means the image is not limited to what fits on a roll width: a single continuous mural can run the full length of a corridor.

Surfaces it prints on
UV ink cures on contact rather than absorbing, which is why the surface list is unusually broad: drywall and plaster, brick, concrete, stucco, wood, ceramic tile, marble and stone, glass and acrylic, metal, fabric and existing wall coverings. On dark, strongly coloured or transparent surfaces, a white ink layer is printed first so the colours above it stay accurate — which is where the dual-printhead models earn their price.
Whatever the material, it has to be sound: clean, dry, structurally solid and not flaking. A wall that would fail under paint will fail under print too.
What to look for in a vertical wall printer
- Printheads. One head does colour and white in sequence; two heads let one be dedicated to white. Two heads matter if dark or transparent surfaces will be routine work.
- Print height. The single hardest limit on the machine. Vertiq models range from up to 2 m to up to 4 m — check the figure against the walls you actually expect to quote.
- Sensors. Ultrasonic distance sensing is what lets the head track an uneven wall instead of crashing into it or losing focus.
- Software. You need a RIP that handles white-ink layers, tiling between passes, and colour management. Ask what is included and whether the licence is genuine and transferable.
- Mobility. Wheeled bases, modular packages and travel cases decide how many people and how long it takes to get the machine into a third-floor office.
