UV Floor Printer

The same UV inkjet machine that prints a wall can print the floor. Four of the five Vertiq models are specified for horizontal printing on concrete, tile, stone and wood.

How floor printing works

In floor mode the machine is set to run along horizontal rails laid across the area to be printed. Instead of climbing a wall, the printhead carriage travels the length of the rail while the machine indexes sideways, printing in bands exactly as it does vertically. UV LEDs beside the head cure the ink as it lands, so each band is dry before the next one starts and the printed area can be walked on far sooner than paint or a resin graphic.

The rails do two jobs: they hold the head at a constant distance from a floor that is rarely perfectly level, and they keep the geometry square so that a large graphic tiles correctly across many passes. As with walls, width along the rail direction is limited only by how many times you are willing to reposition the machine.

Floor surfaces

Because UV ink cures rather than soaks, the substrate list is broad: polished and sealed concrete, screed, ceramic and porcelain tile, natural stone, marble, terrazzo, engineered and solid wood, and metal panels. Dark or strongly coloured floors are printed over a white ink base layer so the artwork above stays accurate — a job the dual-printhead models are built for.

Condition matters more than material. The floor has to be clean, dry, sound and free of loose coatings or sealers that will lift. And because floors are walked on, plan a clear protective coat over the print, matched to the substrate and the traffic the space will see.

How durable is a printed floor?

UV ink cures hard on contact, but a floor takes traffic that a wall never does, so a printed floor is normally protected with a clear coat or sealer appropriate to the substrate and the expected traffic. Specify the protective layer as part of the job, not as an afterthought.
